Melissa has won several awards for her illustrations including Caldecott Honors for A River of Words and The Right Word. She conducts extensive research for her biographies for children, which she illustrates with watercolor, mixed media, and collage. She has illustrated more than 100 books as well as toys, puzzles, and games for Eboo. Melissa has written four books including Some Writer! The Story of E. B. White and Carmine: A Little More Red, a New York Times Best Illustrated Book. She illustrated Firefly July: A Year of Very Short Poems by Paul Janeczko, which won several awards including Publisher’s Weekly Best Picture Book 2014 and ALA Notable Books for Children 2015. She recently illustrated How to Read a Book by Kwame Alexander.

Illustration Institute raises appreciation for and awareness of illustration in its many forms. It offers people of all ages the opportunity to learn from master artists and working professionals through exhibitions, workshops, and talks at public libraries, museums, schools, and other community venues.
